Basil essential oil is obtained from the leaves of the Ocimum basilicum plant. This plant gets its name from the Latin word “basilius” and also from the Greek “basilikón phutón” meaning “royal plant”, which is why basil is also known as the queen of herbs or “l’herbe royale”, which means “royal herb” in French”. Basil essential oil emits a warm, sweet, fresh floral herbal scent characterized as an airy, vibrant, uplifting and reminiscent of licorice, somewhat camphoric with hints of spices that energize and stimulate the body and mind, promoting mental clarity, increasing alertness and calming nerves, containing stress and anxiety. This fragrance pairs well with citrus, spicy or floral essential oils such as orange, lemon, fennel, sage, geranium, lavender and neroli. In aromatherapy, sweet basil essential oil is considered stimulating, cleansing, soothing, strengthening, energizing. Basil oil is also believed to repel insects, soothe headaches, and ease respiratory and digestive discomfort. When used in skin care, sweet basil essential oil nourishes, revitalizes, balances, soothes, smoothes, exfoliates and brightens.
